Fibre optics carry data as light, so they cover far greater distances than copper cable and are unaffected by electrical interference. Compatibility is what matters when choosing: the fibre type (single-mode or multi-mode), the connector and the SFP module's wavelength must match at both ends of the line. A media converter brings a fibre line onto an ordinary network cable where a device has no SFP port. GPON/EPON equipment, passive components and installation tools are here too.
