Passive components are the parts of an optical network that need no power: a splitter divides one fibre into several, a splice closure protects the splice point, and an ODF organises and connects fibres in the cabinet. Every split weakens the signal – a 1:8 takes away roughly 10 decibels – so the number of splitters has to be built into the link budget in advance. Adapter colour indicates the connector type: green is APC, blue is UPC.
