A UPS has two ratings, and people often look only at the first: VA (apparent power) and W (real power). Work out your load in watts and pick a UPS that leaves some headroom. The aim is usually not hours of runtime but the few minutes your computer needs to shut down properly without corrupting files. A line-interactive model also corrects voltage fluctuations, while an online type supplies power from the battery continuously and is the most stable. Bear in mind that the battery wears out and needs replacing separately every three to five years.
