An inverter turns the direct current from a battery or solar panel into the alternating current your home runs on. An On-Grid model works only alongside the mains and shuts off during a power cut; an Off-Grid one is independent and needs a battery; a hybrid combines both. Its power rating must exceed the total of everything switched on at once, allowing for the start-up surge of motor-driven appliances. An MPPT controller gets the most out of the panel and charges the battery correctly.
