Running a cable between two buildings isn't always possible, and then the connection goes through the air: a directional unit stands at each end, pointed at the other. The key requirement is clear line of sight – a tree or building in between cuts the signal. Antenna gain and frequency are chosen by distance: 5 GHz is the usual choice, while 60 GHz is much faster over short distances but copes poorly with rain.
