A PoE injector adds power to a network cable where your switch has no PoE port: data goes in on one side, and data plus power come out of the other. For installing a single camera or Wi-Fi access point, it's a cheaper solution than a PoE switch. Check the standard – 802.3af delivers up to 15 watts, 802.3at up to 30 – and remember that a passive 24-volt injector isn't suitable for standards-based devices.
