Firewalls and gateways

Buying guide

A firewall sits between your network and the internet and decides what to let through. Unlike an ordinary router, it also inspects traffic by its content, links branch offices over VPN and manages remote access for staff. When comparing models, look at the throughput that remains with the security features switched on – it's several times lower than the nominal figure. Some features require an annual licence.
