A microwave is mainly for reheating and defrosting food, and with a grill mode you can brown a dish from above. A 20-litre cavity is enough for one or two people; a family will need something roomier. In a small kitchen, an electric oven can replace a full-size one: it bakes, roasts meat, and some models also have a fan setting. A portable electric hob comes in handy at a country house or in a home without gas.
