Buying guide

Start choosing a tablet with the screen size: a large screen is comfortable for films and reading, while a small one slips easily into a bag and is less tiring to hold. RAM determines how smoothly you switch between apps, and storage how many photos and films will fit, so check for a microSD slot too. A Wi-Fi model only gets internet from a wireless network; one with a SIM slot can use the mobile network as well. If you only read books, an e-reader is better: its E Ink screen is easier on the eyes, readable in sunlight and lasts weeks on a charge, though it is no good for video. Not every tablet works with a stylus, so check compatibility before you buy.
