In a power cord, what matters is the plug type at both ends and the cross-section of the conductor. Most computers and monitors use a C13 socket, while printers and small appliances often use C5 or C7 – they don't look alike, but mistakes are common. UPS units have their own cable with connectors at both ends that plug into equipment. Leave some spare length, but an overly long cable will tangle behind the desk. If the insulation is damaged, replace the cable rather than patching it.
