The category determines speed and shielding: Cat5e is perfectly adequate for an ordinary gigabit network, while Cat6 and above are for when you need more or the cable runs through an electrically noisy environment. A shielded version (STP/FTP) protects against electromagnetic interference – rarely needed at home, but useful alongside power cables. On length: 100 metres is the limit beyond which the signal needs boosting. Factory-crimped connectors on a ready-made cable are almost always more reliable than ones fitted on site. Connectors bought separately must match the cable category and conductor type.
